Walking the wall

WALKING THE WALL

northern England

August 2007

A few years after successfully summitting Mount Kenya and halfway through a PhD Ian walked the length of Hadrian’s Wall. With Hungerlust bloggers (and sister and brother-in-law) Claire and Sam Hill he walked the 84 mile National Trail like the Romans – vehicle free and carrying all his kit – in 6 days.

“We are starting to feel the affects of the last 5 days walking by Burgh-by-Sands, the town where Edward I died in 1307.

To one side we see the Lake District and on the other the Scottish borders Edward was so keen for. Finally we see the Latin words ave terminum callis hadriani augusti pervenisti: the end of the Hadrian’s wall path.

But our valedictory drink will have to be delayed; the only pub in the village is closed for another four hours, and our bus back to reality arrives in two.”
